Violence Against Women

WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

" domestic violence is: "the inflicting of physical injury by one family or household member
on another; also: a repeated or habitual pattern of such behavior".

History of violence against women

Some historians believe that the history of violence against women is tied to the history of women being viewed as property and a gender role assigned to be subservient to men and also other women.

"violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men and to the prevention of the full advancement of women, and that violence against women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a subordinate position compared with men.....

In the 1870s courts in the United States stopped recognizing the common-law principle that a husband had the right to "physically chastise an errant wife".

Impact on society

The World Health Organization reports that violence against women puts an undue burden on health care services with women who have suffered violence being more likely to need health services and at higher cost, compared to women who have not suffered violence.
Several studies have shown a link between poor treatment of women and international violence. These studies show that one of the best predictors of inter- and intranational violence is the maltreatment of women in the society.

Domestic violence

Women are more likely to be victimized by someone that they are intimate with, commonly called "Intimate Partner Violence" or (IPV).

The impact of domestic violence in the sphere of total violence against women can be understood through the example that 40-70% of murders of women are committed by their husband or boyfriend.

violence is not always perpetrated as a form of physical violence but can also be psychological.

" In unmarried relationships this is commonly called dating violence" whereas in the context of marriage it is called domestic violence.

Women are much more likely than men to be murdered by an intimate partner...

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ISLAM

The relationship between Islam and domestic violence is disputed. Even among Muslims, the uses and interpretations of  "shari’a",  the moral code and religious law of Islam.

In the Qur'an regarding marital relationships find that hitting a woman is allowed. Broader interpretation of the term does not support hitting a woman.Domestic violence among the Muslim community is considered a complicated humans right issue due to varying legal remedies for women by nation, the extent to which they have support or opportunities to divorce their husbands, cultural stigma to hide evidence of abuse, and inability to have abuse recognized by police or the judicial system.

Domestic Violence what you can do about it

Domestic violence should always be taken seriously. There's no way of knowing if the next attack could be much more violent.

When under physical attack, be sure to :-

Shield the most sensitive parts of your body, especially your head and stomach.

Stay as calm as possible......

When appropriate, call the police for help, preferably without the abuser knowing you are doing so........

Once the violent episode is over, you may want to contact your emergency department for treatment and evaluation of your injuries, psychiatric assistance and aid in creating a police report. This record may be needed for a restraining order to help prevent the abuser from further harming the abused.

Love and respect woman. Look to her not only for comfort, but for strength and inspiration and the doubling of your intellectual and moral powers. Blot out from your mind any idea of superiority ,you have none.
